How To Pack

Storage Options:

Make sure you select the proper storage options when adding storage items to your cart.

Labeling Items:

Our storage label must be affixed to ALL stored items, including boxes, bikes, furniture, etc. The storage labels are included with storage packages and can be purchase separately through our website. Please fill out the entire label clearly with permanent ink. The label must be securely taped to the side of each box or package.

Secure and Seal All Boxes and Items:

Boxes: Tape each loose edge of the box. This will require 3 pieces of tape for the top and 3 pieces for the bottom. Our moveout packages include packing tape. If you did not purchase a moveout pack or tape from us, please use a quality packing tape to seal your boxes.

Other Items: All items must be secured and taped shut. Place plastic on items that could be prone to scratching during the moving process.

How to Safely Pack Your Items:

Books: All books must be packed in our small boxes (1.5 cu. ft.) to minimize weight.

Refrigerators: Refrigerators must be unplugged TWO DAYS before the scheduled pick up time. Make sure the fridge is completely defrosted, clean and dry. New England Student Services will refuse pickup of any refrigerator that is not defrosted, clean and dried out at the time of pick up. Secure any loose items inside the fridge, place a spacer between the door and the fridge so that it is not air tight and then tape it shut. The spacer will allow air to circulate inside the fridge to eliminate odors. The power cord needs to be coiled up and taped to the back of the fridge. The refrigerator should be available for inspection by a New England Student Services employee, then boxed or we will not be responsible for scratches or dents.

Electronic Equipment: When packing electronic equipment, wrap each item with bubble wrap and pack soft items such as towels and linens tight around the equipment. Pack the items in the original boxes if possible. The outside of each box containing delicate items should be labeled "fragile".

TV's & Monitors: TV's and computer monitors should be placed in a box with bubble wrap and soft items packed tightly around it. Label the box "fragile".

Microwaves: The glass turntable in the microwave needs to be either removed and stored separately or securely taped to the bottom of the microwave. The microwave then needs to be placed in a box. Label the box "fragile" Make sure you select microwave as an option for your stored items.

File Cabinets & Desks: File cabinets and desks need to have the contents removed so that they are not too heavy. Tape the drawers shut and place a label securely on the cabinet or desk. Make sure you select the proper option for each item.

Clothing, Bedding & Linens: These soft items should be used to pack around delicate items as cushioning in the boxes.

Carpet & Rugs: These items should be rolled tight and taped in several places so that they will not unroll in storage. Wrap the item in plastic if you want to keep dust off of it. Place a label securely on the carpet or rug.

Futons: Futon Mattresses need to be folded in half and taped. The mattress should be wrapped in plastic and have a label placed on it. (We will supply a plastic mattress bag to store it in when we come to pick it up) Futon frames need to have a separate label placed on them. Futon frames need to be disassembled and have a separate label placed on it.

Plastic Bins with casters: Plastic bins with casters need to have the casters removed and placed inside the bin before storing. The wheels on these items break easily and New England Student Services will not be responsible for broken casters that were not removed prior to storage.

Posters: Posters should be rolled up and placed in a poster tube. Poster tubes are available to purchase on our website. Attach a label to the poster tube.

Fans: Small desk fans can be stored in a box with other items. Large box fans or tall fans need to be stored separately. Place a label securely on the fan.

Bicycles: Bikes are fine the way they are. Place a storage label somewhere on the bike where it will not come loose during the moving process.

Additional Items: Use common sense when packaging other items not listed in this guide. Delicate items should be packed tightly in boxes with soft items. Heavy items should be packed in boxes by themselves or stored individually. If you have any questions about how to safely pack an item please feel free to contact us via email.
